The SOMAFCO Prize Initiative was launched by the SOMAFCO Trust on the 3rd of June 2010. The purpose of the initiative which was inspired by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe is to support existing community based organizations to achieve deeper impact in spheres of national priority such as Early Childhood Development, enterprise and skills development. This is a departure from the idea of mobilizing resources to re-invent the wheel. The SOMAFCO Trust together with its partners, the Independent Development Trust and Mckinsey & Company launched this initiative to recognize and support Beacons in our communities that shape futures and as a result the country.
The initiative identifies programs or initiatives in communities that resonate with the key principles that drove the Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College to its success. The principles of VISION, INITIATIVE AND COLLABORATION, are fundamental principles which resulted in the success of SOMAFCO.
In 2011, after a rigorous 9 month process, the following initiatives where recognized as beacons of excellence:
1. Nge Zandla Zethu in the category of Vocational Training and Entrepeneurship- Gauteng
2. Loaves and Fishes Network in the category for Early Childhood Development- Eastern Cape
3. Qongwana Primary in the category of School Nutrition- Kwa-Zulu Natal
These initiatives received R 25 000-00 from the SOMAFCO Trust and further support has been directed to these initiatives towards assisting them to become self-reliant.
