SOMAFCO Trust

Vision

To be a proactive civil society Youth Organization born out of the legacy of SOMAFCO and be an agent for positive change by fostering youth empowerment in South Africa. The SOMAFCO Trust is civil society organization focusing on youth development.

About the Trust

It was formally registered as legal entity in 2006 as public benefit organization. It derives much of its "mandate" from the legacy of Solomon Mahlangu Freedom College (SOMAFCO) which was articulated as follows by founding document of the ANC policy document of 1978:

"produce such cadres as will be able to serve the society in all fields i.e. political, economic, socio-cultural, educational and scientific".

Inscribed at the cemetery in Mazimbu where young lives where lost to malaria and where elderly people never got to see a democratic South Africa are the following words which further reinforce the ideology that was being imbued amongst the students in SOMAFCO.

These words poignantly reflect the vision and purpose of the education in Somafco. Thus the objective of the Somafco Trust is to “ to serve the society in all fields i.e. political, economic, socio-cultural, educational and scientific” however placing emphasis on the young people of South Africa.

The SOMAFCO Trust places a strong focus on education and youth development as Somafco was particularly concerned with youth development and education. Regardless, South Africa future and the future of any nation, is always tied to its youth.

South Africa faces massive challenges in the this area and it is only appropriate to leverage a heritage such as the unique SOMAFCO heritage for the benefit of youth development of all youth, regardless, of gender, race and background.

The SOMAFCO Trust has placed its focus on the previously disadvantaged youth of South Africa but will broaden its focus as it grows.
